10 hypnotherapy techniques that may help in lowering blood pressure
Medical Disclaimer:
Hypnotherapy is not a cure for blood pressure. Always consult your doctor or healthcare professional before attempting alternative therapies such as hypnotherapy, especially for managing a medical condition such as high blood pressure.
Here are 10 techniques that I use with clients to help them with blood pressure:
Progressive Muscle Relaxation: I teach clients how to relax their individual muscle groups using their imagination and this helps promote overall relaxation which can help reduce stress-related blood pressure spikes.
Breathing Techniques: I teach clients slow deep breathing exercises (“in for two, out for three…” “in for three, out for four…”) to bring about the body’s relaxation response which is an automatic physiological response to the slightly longer out-breath. I get the client to practice this breathing within the hypnotherapy session. The relaxation response can help regulate blood pressure.
Visualisation: I help clients visualise/feel/experience calm and peaceful scenes, which can help reduce stress and anxiety, contributing to lower blood pressure.
Guided Meditation: Hypnotherapy sessions themselves are very similar to guided meditations and sessions focussed on relaxation and stress reduction may indirectly impact on blood pressure levels.
Positive Affirmations: Part of the homework I set for clients after a hypnotherapy session is to get them to write/record/journal some positive statements related to health and well-being to help them shift into a more positive mindset and reduce stress.
Anchoring: I help clients create mental and physical anchors which they learn how to activate when stressed, helping them to quickly enter a relaxed state and to maintain a healthier blood pressure. An example of an anchor could be taking a deep breath in or using some sort of physical anchor such as squeezing your thumb with your fingers or even a picture, relaxing scene or favourite colour that comes to mind.
Mindfulness: I teach clients how to be fully present in the moment, fostering a non-reactive awareness that can help manage stress and lower blood pressure.
Stress Management: Throughout our hypnotherapy session I guide the client through strategies to identify and cope with stressors, leading to a more balanced emotional state and improved blood pressure.
Self-Hypnosis: Within my treatment plans, I teach clients how to enter the hypnotic state on their own, using relaxation techniques and suggestions for lowering blood pressure. Self-hypnosis is a very empowering and useful way of using your mind and body to create a deeply relaxed state and it actually becomes quite easy with regular practice.
Biofeedback: In a hypnotherapy session, I read the client’s stress reactions such as heart rate, breathing rate, skin tone and with these observations can help them learn to control their physiological responses to stress and this in turn can have a positive impact on their blood pressure.
