‘Will hypnotherapy work for me?’ is one of the most common questions I get from clients and the overwhelming answer to this question is YES for most of us!

Hypnotherapy works by presenting suggestions to the mind when we are in a relaxed state. When we are relaxed we can bypass any resistance from the conscious, often critical, part of our mind or ourselves. Think about the times when you were uptight and stressed and said no to a suggestion that a friend made, flatly refused it in fact, only to realise when you were relaxed and in a good place that actually your friend was right all along and you should have followed their advice!

Hypnotherapy allows you to gain an understanding of why you are the way you are and what needs to change in order for you to overcome your problems and to thrive and prosper.

We can only accept positive suggestions that will help us get rid of our issues, making hypnotherapy a safe and secure way of dealing with many problematic experiences including:

  • Letting go of destructive thinking habits that hold us back
  • Helping us get out of being stuck in a rut in life
  • Letting go of the past and enjoying life in the present
  • Losing anxiety and gaining confidence and self-esteem
  • Getting rid of excess weight and enjoying fitness and vitality
  • Getting rid of fears and phobias, addictions and unhealthy attachments with others

When we are in a comfortable relaxed state, this is often referred to as hypnosis, but really it is just that: a calm relaxed state which we experience many times in a day, for example, when we daydream or find ourselves thinking about the shopping when we are driving a car. So hypnosis is, like relaxation, completely natural to us.

There are things that you can actively do to make sure that you are getting the greatest benefits of a hypnotherapy treatment plan:

Tips for Enhancing the Hypnotherapy Experience

Here are some tips for enhancing your experience of hypnotherapy and for making each session work for you:

Always come to hypnotherapy with an open mind

Someone may have recommended you to a hypnotherapist yet you are not sure that it will work for you. If you don’t believe that hypnotherapy will work then the process of change may take longer since there will be a part of you that wants to prove to yourself that hypnotherapy isn’t for you. If you are mindful of this part you can challenge it by treating each session that you have with a hypnotherapist as an adventure rather than a chore.

Before going to your session, tell yourself that you will feel better after this session. This will create a positive state of mind, empowering you to get the results that you wish. I provide a fully customised audio recording with each session and recommend that clients experience listening to the audios as a real treat. They are motivated to listen to the audios that will help support them at home. This positive mind-set really boosts the effectiveness of any therapy sessions you have!

Don’t worry if you have a bad day

Imagine a scenario where you are successfully losing weight through hypnosis and hypnotherapy. Everything is going well and then something goes wrong one day and you reach for the biscuits. You may think that you have gone back to square one -that all the excellent work you have done with your therapist has been wasted, undone by this one act of thoughtlessness, but actually this couldn’t be further from the truth.

Having a bad day is perfectly normal in any course of therapy. The key is not to beat yourself up about it. Instead treat it as just having a bad day. Realise what the trigger was that led to eating the biscuits. This will prepare your for similar triggers in the future. None of us are perfect. We are human after all. So setbacks and knockbacks are part of the journey for some of us. Realise that just by booking a consultation with a hypnotherapist you will never go back to square one.

Don’t put any pressure on yourself to change

The process of positive change will come at a natural time and pace for you. We are all different and therefore some of us will take longer to get rid of a bad habit, others quicker. We must accept this and never put any pressure on ourselves to change since this will only prolong the process of change.

So never come into a session putting any pressure on yourself. Go with the flow, and enjoy the experience, and you will be surprised by what you can achieve through hypnotherapy!
